Letter from the Capacity Building Director |
Our work is too important and too complex to do alone.
Partnerships are part of every day of our lives – from living with a partner to cooperating with a co-worker or contractually working with another agency to achieve a shared goal. However, partnerships can be challenging to sustain and a bit like healthy eating. We all know we should do it. We talk a lot about it. A few of us do it. Fewer of us have the time to do it well, and many of us give up after a few failed attempts!
Nonprofit partnerships, like healthy eating, keep us strong and are worth the effort for the simple reason that they help us solve the complex issues we seek to address. A single organization cannot solve a multi-faceted issue like Indiana’s affordable housing crisis. Community connections can.
This month, PI provided closing remarks for the Balance of State Continuum of Care’s Spring Development Day. During the presentation, PI’s Hale Crumely and I shared the power of starting with the “Why,” developing the “How,” and defining the “What,” of partnerships. We also shared how coalitions and a common language propel partnerships to action as well as a simple three-step process for forming productive partnerships. Please keep an eye out as we transform content from this presentation into a series of six upcoming webinars helping your community achieve housing stability.
If you are reading this, you are part of the very special partnership that is the Prosperity Indiana network. We love our network and are constantly amazed what our partners accomplish individually and collectively. Eighty cents (80¢) of every dollar that contributes to nonprofit revenue in the United States comes from government grants or contracts and we know that federal, state, and local governments have a critical role to play in meeting complex social issues. However, we also know that some of the most innovative and effective solutions to complex social problems come from community groups. Thank you for being a partner in the PI network! Regional Meetings Update We are excited for you all to get the chance to meet our new Executive Director at our upcoming regional meetings. If you have not gotten the chance to register for our updated meetings in August, please take a look at our website to find more information on the NEW dates for the meetings taking place near you, and sign up if you are available to attend! This meeting will provide opportunities for our members as well as other partners across the state to meet our new Executive Director and share their thoughts, concerns, and recommendations for the organization. We'll also discuss how we can work together to serve the community economic development of the state of Indiana. We look forward to seeing you all in August!

Prosperity Indiana’s Hoosier Housing Needs Coalition is organizing the voices of the faith leaders in Indiana to come together and ask the Indiana General Assembly to do more for Hoosier housing needs, especially when it comes to ensuring that all tenants in Indiana have the right to safe, habitable housing. Know a faith leader in Indiana? Share this letter with them and ask them to sign on.

Center for Congregations Grant Resources Aligning with the organization’s mission, the Center for Congregations grant program is designed to help Indiana congregations fund and use the best resources to address their challenges and opportunities.
The grants program is one of the Center’s four primary services alongside resource consulting, education programs and the Congregational Resource Guide (CRG).
A resource grant is a matching grant of up to $15,000 for qualifying Indiana congregations to fund a variety of expenses, resources and activities. |

Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmaking Program
Approximately $550 million is available to select approximately 11 eligible grantmakers to develop an efficient, simplified process so that organizations that historically have faced barriers to receive funding can more seamlessly apply for grants that address environmental harms and risks. Eligible applicants include community-based nonprofits, or partnerships that include community-based nonprofits. Applications must be submitted on or before May 31st. Find more information here. |

Mental Health America of Indiana Launches Mental Health of America Indianapolis
With partnership from the City of Indianapolis, MHA Indy will focus on behavioral health systems reform in Marion County.
Request For Proposals for MHA Indy Vitality Grants will be posted on June 1st!
ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding will be eligible for grassroots and larger entities to address juvenile justice and mental health system reform. |

Upcoming HUD Funding Opportunities Applications have also opened for the Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program, with $60 million in grant funding available to support selected communities in the development and implementation of a coordinated community approach to preventing and ending youth homelessness. The Project Grant Rule Hub: What Funders and Grantees Need to Know
While general operating support grants are oftentimes the simplest way for private foundations to support grantees that lobby, they are not always an option (i.e. when funding a fiscally sponsored project or program within a larger nonprofit). Luckily, private foundations have an alternative: a secret weapon called the Project Grant Rule (PGR) that allows them to safely fund a public charity’s project, including lobbying!
